How much does the training cost? Are there any subsidies?

The cost of the combined training course for child minders and educational assistants in Upper Austrian child education and care centres is EUR 1,370.

The following additional training courses are possible as part of this programme:
- Further training of a pedagogical assistant in Upper Austrian childcare centres to become a childminder: EUR 720.
- Further training for staff with pedagogical training to work as a childminder: EUR 220.

What are the authorisation requirements?

General admission requirements 
 • The physical and mental aptitude of candidates must be medically certified. 
 • The minimum age for working as a childminder is 19 years. Attending the course is possible from the age of 18, exercising the activity is only possible from the age of 19.
 • For persons whose first language is not German, proven language skills are required (German language certificate at least B2 level).
 • Pedagogical assistants can work in a child education and care centre from the age of 18.

Special admission requirements 
for later employment as a childminder:
 • Personal and family suitability must be given,
 • spatial criteria must be fulfilled (see checklist of the Upper Austrian Education Directorate).

The fulfilment of these special criteria must be checked by the childminder associations in advance of the training.
